Every website on the uchicago.edu domain is required to be registered with up-to-date information.
In addition to providing IT Services the appropriate site-specific contact information to facilitate help with site maintenance, the website registry enables IT Services to communicate any critical software and security upgrades that might directly affect site integrity and security. Ensuring a secure environment protects both the University and the website.
Web properties are websites and applications the University uses for academic, research, and communications purposes. The University of Chicago’s web presence includes, but is not limited to:
-
Institutional websites and web applications, including www.uchicago.edu
-
Websites and web applications involved in e-commerce
-
Schools, centers, institutes, and departmental websites and web applications
-
Individual or project-oriented websites and web applications
All University web properties must adhere to the standards specified in the Web Properties Management Standards.
Every website on the uchicago.edu domain is required to be registered with up-to-date information. It is critical for IT Services to have the ability to communicate with website owners for issues relating to branding, accessibility, and security (e.g. platform updates and outages). A non-registered University Web Property may be taken offline until accurate and up to date information is provided.
Web properties should be registered when subdomain approval has been granted by Web Services and University Communications.
You can find what web properties are already registered by utilizing the Quick Search or Advanced Search options within https://registry.uchicago.edu/.
The Editor Agreement is an acknowledgement by University site owners that they understand the purpose of the Web Registry and agree that the information they are entering is factually correct and up-to-date.
You will need to agree to the Editor Agreement before making any changes. You can access editing privileges to the Website Registry by clicking the Editor Agreement tab, selecting I Agree, and pressing Submit.
If you do not opt in to the Editor Agreement, you will not be able to edit fields within the web registry.
The Web Registry is used by IT Services to identify site owners and gather information about the University’s websites and applications.
Registering or updating a web property record does not impact your live site.
The UChicago Website Registry informs IT Services of web properties relevant to the University.
Web properties without registered owners are subject to review by unit and division leadership and are at risk of being deactivated.
Anyone with a CNet ID has the ability to register a new web property. Start by logging into the UChicago Website Registry and opting into the Editor Agreement.
Select the Add a New Property tab and complete the required fields. Upon saving, your web property is registered.
You can update an existing property’s information by locating it within the search options of the Website Registry. Click on the relevant link to navigate to the Details page. You will be able to edit each section by clicking the Edit button next to each field.
Site owners should register their properties in the Web Registry as soon as their subdomain request has been approved by IT Services and University Communications. For more information about requesting a subdomain hosted on uchicago.edu, please visit the Domains page on the Website Resource Center website.
You should register your web property after you receive confirmation that your subdomain request has been approved.
Please note that the Web Registry is not a domain parking service. For more information on requests related to UChicago subdomains, please visit the Website Resource Center’s page about subdomain guidance.
Site owners are the faculty or staff leadership that are ultimately responsible for the website. Often site owners will not be the primary contact for day-to-day website operations and will appoint a technical maintainer. The technical maintainer often maintains Registry records on behalf of the site owner.
Units should review their web properties within the Registry on a regular basis, and should occur during personnel changes and significant updates to your site’s technical information.
Once a web property has been registered, it does not need to be registered again.
After logging into the Website Registry, locate the web property you own and edit its details. From the Edit screen, update your site’s contact information accordingly and Save.
The Website Registry will occasionally trigger notifications that are delivered via email based on IT Services’ current records. In some instances, this may result in identifying you as the owner of a particular web property.
Log in to the Website Registry and locate the web property in the Search tab. After clicking on the link of the record, you will be able to see the information that IT Services has for this property, and edit accordingly.
IT Services may contact site owners periodically to request site owners review their website’s information.
If you receive an email asking you to update your web property information, please log in to the Website Registry and review the web properties assigned to your unit.
If/when content becomes irrelevant, out of date, or moved elsewhere and there are no plans for the site to continue or be actively maintained by a site owner, the web property should be retired.
